A.R. Graduation Team Starts Production

GradFest is now behind us! Beyond the Tassel is now a step closer to graduation day, making us move to the next stage of our project timeline. Before we go into our next stage though, let’s talk about how GradFest went. Overall, a great experience for everyone who participated. As GradFest was a 2 day event, the shifts each group member had were split evenly so that we may alternate working on Beyond the Tassel and attending GradFest as students, as we’re all expected to graduate. The first shift was set up for Sara, Ian, and Kevlynn on March 12th, from 2pm to 4pm. Both days were quite cold unfortunately so a large obstacle we had to overcome was fewer people eager to stick around.

The second shift was set up for Tray, Ayon, and I (Nareg) on March 13th, from 11am to 2pm. The second day unfortunately was not only cold, but also very windy. Personally, I had a great time doing the tabling event. It was super chill to have Tray and Ayon there to help guide what to say to passersby. I remember one funny thing that occurred to me was though; while waiting for Ayon and Tray to go grab food and go through GradFest, as the day was super windy and we were using an Easy-Up tent, a strong gust of wind hit me while tabling for the few minutes they stepped away and had the tent completely flip over and almost hit someone.

Maya Journey

Getting to the work I’ve personally done for Beyond the Tassel, I was so far in charge of making all of the 3d models used within the GradFest Demo and it was an experience. I’ve had experience in maya for the past few semesters, so I was prepared for the work required for the Demo, but there were some obstacles that ended up bringing some challenge to getting all the assets sent by my deadline. For example, 3 time consuming and cumbersome assets were the Graduation Tassel, the 3d model of the CSUN Library, and the Graduation Lei.

First, for the graduation Lei, I felt duplicating a bunch of flowers were the only way to get a tassel that would look worthy for the Demo, but I couldn’t find any free assets on the internet so I had to physically make them. Making my own Lei was just overall time consuming more than complicated, which made it harder to reach my deadline on time.

Second for the CSUN Library, it was a fun project to achieve but some issues required logical thinking that I couldn’t figure out accurately, and had the help of other students to find the distance of between the pillars of the Library fit within the 10 pillar range that it has.

Finally, for the Graduation Tassel, I’ve always had a tough time making thin long string-like assets in maya, so I felt finding a tassel from the internet was the most efficient way to get it done. However, while importing a free asset, I realized that a whole bunch of other assets were packed with the tassel and was time consuming just to split those extra assets off and deleting them from the overall package.
