Gradfest Prep
The “beyond the tassel” group has now reached its third week, and there has been so much
progress and hair-pulling moments that have occurred. To preface, I am specifically in charge of the animation of the AR project. With Gradfest approaching, we wanted to create something that would serve as a teaser for what is to come with the final day of graduation. To do this, we were able to create a poster that we could hang up during Gradfest, and table to show off how to use Hoverlay. However, this meant that there had to be an eye-catching animation that would be showcased through the app, which is where I came in.

Mishaps in Maya
I had worked on the short 4 second animation for two weeks. There were a lot of complications that I had run into with many different apps, two of those being mainstream “industry-standard” softwares. I first began the animation in Maya, where I had imported the files Nareg was able to create for me. However, Maya was unable to export the files as a GLB file, so I decided to move over to unity and hopefully animate there while using the Hoverlay plugin to export the file. Although this seemed like it would work, it didn’t, as it resulted in a no-texture animation that not only would not play, but was also not visible through the app.

Believe in Blender
Finally, it seemed like it was time to move over to Blender as this software was able to export to GLB, and would make the transfer process smoother for Ayon. After learning how to use Blender, I was finally able to export the animation needed for gradfest! Although it was very time-consuming, the animation looked a lot better than I thought I could make it.

So the moral of the story here is to only ever use blender for the rest of my animation/modeling career.
