Dev Log #1: Ayon Wickramasinghe

February 20th, 2025

A.R. Graduation Team Starts Production

With the upcoming 2025 CSUN graduation, our team has begun production on creating an Augmented Reality experience targeted towards our graduating seniors. We have divided our project up into two main parts. One experience designed for the soon to come Grad-Fest, and our final experience which will launch a few weeks before graduation. Our overall goal is to create a memorable experience for this year’s graduating class through the use of augmented reality.

Grad Fest

Our first project is creating a poster for Grad Fest. The poster will contain a QR code that takes the user to our demo AR project. The goal is to introduce seniors to Hoverlay and inform them about our upcoming final project. Here’s our first design of the Grad Fest poster, created by our Art Director, Sara De La Cruz.

3D-Modeling

Our 3D Designer, Nareg Hannessian, spent the past week working on 3D models for our A.R. demo. The idea is the user scans our QR code on our poster and is taken to our A.R. space. In the space is a gift box that when interacted with, bursts open with graduation-related goodies. Nareg has finished creating the models and is sending them over to Trey Fujii who will animate them for the final product. Once Trey finishes animating he’ll send the models to me. I’ll then being working on our final A.R. scene for Grad Fest.

A.R. Development

We’ve begun production for our augmented reality scene for our Grad Fest poster.

I, Ayon Wickramasinghe, am the main Hoverlay developer and am currently

working on a prototype for Grad Fest. The main focus is using the physical poster

as an anchor for our virtual graduation gift box. This way when the user scans the

QR code, our virtual box stays locked onto the poster. Currently the main difficulty

is getting the box to lock on. The anchor function is based on Google’s ARCore

and it has a strict set of rules for what can be considered trackable or not. As the

team’s Research Director, I’ll make sure I’ll do everything I can to work around

this issue. I’m also doing research for our final project so once we successfully get

through Grad Fest we can begin production of the final project immediately.

For our website, developed by our Web Manager Ian Hynds, our Project Manager Kevlynn Jefferson brought her camera and organized a picture day so we can have our headshots put onto the website. We also presented our project pitch to the class and are ready to kick this project into full swing!
